Privacy Policy

We built Chores to connect neighbors, not to collect data. Here's exactly what we collect, how we use it, and the controls you have.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only what's needed to run the Chores platform:

  • Account information: Name, email address, and password (stored encrypted via Supabase Auth).
  • Profile information: Bio, skills, profile photo, and ZIP code — all optional and fully editable.
  • Job information: Title, description, category, pay, date, and the address of where the job takes place.
  • Location data: ZIP code used to match workers with nearby jobs and display pins on the map.
  • Messages: In-app messages between users, stored securely and never sold to third parties.
  • Payment data: We do not store credit card numbers. Payments are processed through Stripe, which has its own privacy policy.

2. Location Data & Map Pins

By default, job pins on the map are placed within approximately half a mile of the actual job address. This protects the poster's home address from being revealed to the public before a worker is hired.

You have two options for how your job's location appears on the map:

  • Approximate location (default, recommended): Your job pin is placed within ±0.25 miles of your actual address. Workers see the general area, not your exact home. The precise address is only shared with the worker you hire.
  • Exact location (opt-in): If you enable "Show Exact Location" in your Privacy settings, your job pin will appear at your precise address. Only enable this if you're comfortable sharing your exact location publicly on the map.

In either case, the exact address is never shown in the public job feed. It is only disclosed to the specific worker you accept for the job.

3. Profile Visibility

Your profile is visible to nearby users by default. You can set it to private at any time in your Privacy settings.

When your profile is set to public, other users can see your name, photo, bio, skills, rating, and number of jobs completed.

When your profile is set to private, visitors see only your name and a lock indicator. They can send you a request to view your profile, which arrives as a message in your inbox. You decide whether to accept by responding.

Regardless of your visibility setting, job posters can always see the profiles of workers who apply to their jobs, and workers can see the profiles of posters whose jobs they are hired for.

4. How We Use Your Information

  • To match workers with nearby jobs based on ZIP code distance.
  • To facilitate in-app messaging between job posters and workers.
  • To process payments and maintain escrow until job completion.
  • To send notifications about job applications, messages, and payment events (if enabled).
  • To calculate and display ratings and reviews.
  • To enforce our community guidelines and resolve disputes.

We do not sell your data to advertisers. We do not share your personal information with third parties except as needed to operate the platform (e.g., Stripe for payments, Supabase for database hosting).

5. Your Privacy Controls

You have direct control over your privacy in the app's Settings → Privacy tab:

  • Profile Visibility: Toggle your profile between public and private.
  • Show Exact Location: Choose whether your job pins appear at your exact address or within a half-mile radius.
  • Usage Analytics: Opt out of anonymous usage data collection used to improve the app.
  • Marketing Emails: Opt out of promotional emails at any time.

6. Data Retention & Deletion

You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account. When you delete your account:

  • Your profile, bio, and skills are permanently removed.
  • Your job posts are removed from the public feed.
  • Message history is retained for 30 days for dispute resolution purposes, then permanently deleted.
  • Payment records are retained for 7 years as required by financial regulations.

7. Security

All data is encrypted in transit using TLS. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text. Authentication is handled by Supabase Auth, which implements industry-standard security practices.

We perform regular security reviews and will notify you promptly if a data breach affects your account.

8. Children's Privacy

Chores is intended for users 16 years of age and older. Users under 18 must have parental or guardian consent. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe someone under 16 has created an account, contact us immediately at support@choresnearme.com and we will delete the account and all associated data.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the platform evolves. If we make material changes, we'll notify you via email or an in-app notice at least 14 days before the changes take effect.
